Week 1 - Day 5 - Activity 2

Hi!

In case you still don't know what the Summer Learning Journey is here is an explanation. The SLJ is a learning thing that helps you in the holidays to prevent the summer slide. The summer slide is something that means we lose lots of our learning in the holidays when we can prevent most of that by doing 3 blog posts a day for 4 weeks not including weekends. That means there are 60 blog posts that we can do to help us. Best of all this is a competition so each blog has a certain amount of points. So at the end of the holidays our points are added up and we get prizes.

Here is what we have to do.

For this activity, listen to the podcast of Yusra Mardini, or read her story on her personal website.
On your blog, retell the story of this amazing young woman from Syria.

Here is my changed version of the story.
My aim is to make it similar but not copy the writing.

Yusra Mardini and her older sister were caught in the Syrian war. To save themselves they boarded a full little boat and set out for Europe to hopefully find a safer home. Around 15 minutes later the engine died out. Since Yusra is a professional swimmer she was determined to not let anyone drown. Yusra and her sister had gotten into the water with two other people and swam fro about 3 and a half hours to make sure the boat didn't flip. Around a year later her work was noticed and she became a member of the refugee olympic team to represent so many people. Since then things have gone smoothly for Yusra.

That was it.
I know that it doesn't look interesting as you are scrolling
by but it is a really interesting story of someone.
Here is a link to the site where the story was: LINK
Comment some feedback on how I could improve.
Do you know about anything like this?
Until next time...
Bye!

  2. Hi Abby! It's Mia here form Yaldhurst. Awesome work! I really liked the way that you used your own words and didn't copy the entire story. I also liked the way that you made it short, but with everything that is needed in it.

Wow, I don't think I would be able to swim for 3 hours, I don't think I can manage 15 minutes! It must take a lot of determination, don't you think?

Just check through your text, there are a couple grammar errors, if you fixed that, it would be awesome! ;)

    Great work!
    Mia

    1. Hi Mia, I really appreciate that you took the time to comment on my blog. One of my main goals for rewriting the story was to not parrot anything. I could swim for 3 hours but not like that. What if there were sharks.

      Kind regards,
      Abby.

  3. Hi Abby,

What a great little summary of Yusra Mardini's story. Summarising is quite a tricky skill so you've done really well to note down all the important information in so few words. Do you like swimming? I used to compete when I was younger but now I just do it for fun. :)

    Have a great day, Abby.

    Bye for now,

    Mikey
