A House or a Home?

In the 1800s, most Māori lived in villages called pa. Each village had many buildings – kauta where people cooked, pataka where they stored goods and wharepuni where the Māori slept. A traditional wharepuni had a thatched roof and walls made of timber, fern, rushes and bark. Look at the picture below of a traditional wharepuni. Does it look like your house?

On your blog, compare the wharepuni to your own home. What are two similarities and two differences between a wharepuni and your house?

My house we have a Door we have windows and we have a roof and walls.

Wharepunis have a Door we have windows and we have a roof and walls.

So that's what they have thats simulare.

well my dads house has timber walls but my mums house doesn't.

Waka Ama

Bonus Activity: Waka Ama

To this day, the people of New Zealand still use waka. Instead of using their waka to transport them from one place to another, they sometimes use waka in special events and in sporting competitions such as Waka Ama. Both boys and girls compete in Waka Ama boat races.

I wouldn't because I will get puffed strait away and I rather swimming and I'm not really competitive.

Activity 2: Setting Sail

The first settlers to come to New Zealand must have been really brave! They had to leave their original homes and sail thousands of miles across the ocean on a special boat called a ‘waka’ to reach New Zealand.

Imagine that you were on board one of the wakas. On your blog, write a short letter to a friend telling them about your voyage to New Zealand. In the letter be sure to tell them how you feel about moving to a new country. If it was me, I would have felt really nervous…

I would be really nervous what if someone was already there

and they attack us when we are going onto the island and if they

don't attack us and let us stay but they dont like me.

I would also be sad because I'm leaving my own house behind

and i would also be leaving a bit of my family behind.

Anyway I hope all goes well for us all on the waka.

Maui and the giant fish.

I'm doing the summer learning journey but I started late but I still want to try to do all of the weeks of it and this one is 3 facts about Maui that I got from the story Maui and the giant fish.

Here's the facts...

1. Māui dreamed of the day that he could go fishing with his older brothers. Each time his brothers returned from a fishing trip Māui would ask, "Next time, can I come fishing with you?"

But Māui's brothers would always make an excuse.

2.Secretly Māui hatched a plan to prove he was a great fisherman. One night when Māui was alone he began weaving a strong fishing line from flax. As he wove he recited an old karakia to give his fishing line strength.

3.The brothers were angry with Māui, but Māui spoke up.

"I have come to fish because Murirangawhenua said I would be a great fisherman. Let your lines down as I say my karakia and you'll catch more fish than you ever have."

Just a random thing I thought you should know...Over many hundreds and thousands of years, these gullies and mountains became part of the landscape of Aotearoa as we know it today. Birds, plants, animals and the people of Hawaiki populated the giant fish of Māui. And in time Māui's giant fish became known as the North Island of Aotearoa, and Māui's canoe the South island.

The Dingo and the Hunter

The Dingo and the Hunter

It was a rainy cold night, there were stars twinkling through the clouds, and you could just see a few stars,

All the people were celebrating the rain that had filled up the dry lakes.

A Hunter came along with a hunting boomerang

and found a Dingo just sitting on a sand hill

So the Hunter threw the boomerang at the Dingo,

But it missed.

Then the hunter saw a kangaroo and

threw it at the kangaroo,

But missed again.

The dingo noticed that the people were hungry,

And so was the dingo.

So the dingo attacked the kangaroo

and brought it to the people.

So they all ate.
