Maui and the giant fish.

I'm doing the summer learning journey but I started late but I still want to try to do all of the weeks of it and this one is 3 facts about Maui that I got from the story Maui and the giant fish.

Here's the facts...

1. Māui dreamed of the day that he could go fishing with his older brothers. Each time his brothers returned from a fishing trip Māui would ask, "Next time, can I come fishing with you?"
But Māui's brothers would always make an excuse.

2.Secretly Māui hatched a plan to prove he was a great fisherman. One night when Māui was alone he began weaving a strong fishing line from flax. As he wove he recited an old karakia to give his fishing line strength.

3.The brothers were angry with Māui, but Māui spoke up.
"I have come to fish because Murirangawhenua said I would be a great fisherman. Let your lines down as I say my karakia and you'll catch more fish than you ever have."

Just a random thing I thought you should know...Over many hundreds and thousands of years, these gullies and mountains became part of the landscape of Aotearoa as we know it today. Birds, plants, animals and the people of Hawaiki populated the giant fish of Māui. And in time Māui's giant fish became known as the North Island of Aotearoa, and Māui's canoe the South island.

Thank you for reading this and please comment a few things that you know about Maui.

  1. Hi again Abby, thanks for sharing three interesting facts about Maui. When I read the story, I really liked the fact about how the North Island of New Zealand is the giant fish that Maui caught, and the South Island was his waka.

    Have you ever been fishing?

It's cool how you've included some speech too.

  3. Kia Ora Abby,

I am so impressed with your post about Maui! I can tell you've put a lot of effort into the facts you've chosen. Have you heard of the story Maui and the Sun? That is my favourite as he stopped the sun from going so fast, which allowed more daylight and time for activities before the sunset.

Here's a link if you wanted to read about the Maui and the Sun story yourself: http://eng.mataurangamaori.tki.org.nz/Support-materials/Te-Reo-Maori/Maori-Myths-Legends-and-Contemporary-Stories/How-Maui-slowed-the-sun

Maybe next activity you complete, you could include an image? It's always nice for us to see which images you choose and the effort you put in.
