Year 8s... on the moon?

Hi Bloggers!

The end of the year is approaching quickly so the year 8s had to make our video.

Emma, from Whitebait media, helped us with the video so we got 'Professional' equipment. Everyone found that filming the video was really fun and the end product is amazing. So enjoy the photos of what we have been doing to get the video ready for the end of year assembly next week...

That was the photos. I really liked the last slide with us on the moon.

We all really enjoyed looking around Whitebait and we like the end product.

We also got a tour around Whitebait media, that's when we took a photo by the green screen.

I used that photo and remove.bg to get us on the moon.

Quick keyboard shortcuts...

For this blog I decided to share some keyboard shortcuts. These are just some easy ones with some that you might not know. I use these all the time. Mostly; Control C and V, Control X and Z. I hope you learn something new in this blog post.

That was everything. There are lots more shortcuts but these are just a few that I have learnt and some of them I use all the time.

Strings... is our coach?

 Hi!

Starting last, last week we have been learning how to play...

Soft ball.

Not very many of us know how to play and it's fun since everyone is learning. For the first session we ran around the bases and practiced throwing and catching in cones. Then last week we practiced fielding and hitting the ball. Then also practiced some more throwing and catching techniques. For those we got taught by Strings. (Yes she told us to call her that.) 

Then this Monday we got taught by Stella and played a very simple game. We split into two groups and each had goes at hitting the ball, running then also fielding to get the ball back in time.  We don't have any pictures at the moment so I will share more of what we learnt.

I hope these tips/information helps if you would like to start learning.

But I suggest that you find more proper information before starting since this blog doesn't have everything and we are still all learning.

This is a inclusive game depending on if you are running or batting it is still fun for everyone.

So some of us know some parts of the game and know what it's like.

The 50 Stars...

 Hi Bloggers!

Last, last Wednesday was a weird day for Rimu since lots of people were out of class.

But the year 7&8s got the honors of being taught by Mr Robertson for the day.

He decided we would be learning about the US election, we looked up lots of things and put it all in one DLO. This was a fun break from what we usually do and it was interesting learning about Donald Trump's family tree. I'll give you a hint on what's to come: (His nephew's picture on google is a house.)

House Hippos... (They live in your chips)

Hello bloggers,

Today is Tuesday so you know what that means... CYBERSMART.

We had lesson 3; How do you evaluate media?

Firstly we watched a video about a house hippo... obviously hippos' aren't in houses. So this is misleading information. So we learnt how to identify these things and see if it is real or...

FAKE!

Then we looked at a snickers advertisement and had to find everything wrong with the image. For example in the picture there was lots of photoshop and other things that just didn't make any sense.

Finally we got to do some creativity work. We found a quote then made a graphic for it. I found this quote from "Brainy Quote."

I found making the graphic for this really fun since there are words like looking, thinking, interesting and knowing. So I could do cool things with those words. Here is what I made with this quote...

That was the graphic I made. My favourite part of it would be the looking part. Overall this lesson was really fun and interesting to see a really, really unnatural advertisement.

Athletics day. An article....

Today is a Tuesday so that means... Cybersmart!

This week and last week we were working on lesson two: LINK.

It was called: How is media constructed.

Media products are made to do these types of things: sharing, advertising, entertaining, etc.

We learnt that there are lots of different types of media.

Here are a few: Newspaper, videos, social media, etc.

Articles are one of them, so for this lessons create task we made an article each about...

NYLD... What could it mean?

 Hi!

Last week on Friday was NYLD.

National Young Leaders Day.

It was so much fun and we learnt lots about leadership and there were lots of inspiring speakers.

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple... ADJECTIVES

 Hi!

This week one of our FLOW Fundamentals were adjectives in grammar.

(Check out my last blog to find out about FLOW Fundamentals.)

So I decided to make a blog post to share about what adjectives are and some examples of them. In fact you probably use them all the time in your writing but don't even know it! I hope that this biteable helps you learn what an adjective is or that you learn something new.

I think that after this week remembering adjectives will be really easy. Well did you know that colours are adjectives? I didn't so I am glad that I checked what an adjective is again otherwise I would completely forget.

What can you do with prime numbers?

 Hi!

It's been the first week back at school and we are doing lots. One of the things we are doing this term is to make a poster displaying all the things on this list:

Times table of the week, Prime number of the week, Grammar focus, Word of the week, Skill of the week, Value of the week, HERO Focus, Here's what's cool now Focus, Country of the week, Song of the week, Blog of the week.

Miss Rennell chose all of those and made a simple poster for week 1. It looks like this:

Then the classes task is to do this using this information, but make it look unique.

Everyone did this by hand, and I found this really fun to do.

The one thing we couldn't do was copy exactly what it says on the original.

It's hard to read but it just says what the original says.

Overall I found this really fun to do and I'm excited to do it every week.

Since once I see other peoples finished ones I will have more ideas on what I can for next week.

How do you... read a recipe?

 Hi!

This week is the first week of term 4.

This term we have home learning. So we have a list of things we can choose to blog about, then do it. Except the list is different this term, we are blogging about old... new skills.

This week I decided to choose: How to read a recipe. If you don't know how then this DLO is for you. But if you do know how you could suggest other important things you need to know to read a recipe.

Camp...

 Hi!

From the 2nd of September to the 4th we went to Arthurs Pass camp.

It was super fun and we did a lot of cool things.Although I didn't put the pictures of the search and rescue, the orienteering and sensory trail.

The Sensory trail was way too dark for photos but we had lots of fun. For it we were in the dark with no torches and had to hold and follow a rope through the forest. Then on the way back we were blindfolded and a buddy lead us through. The orienteering was fun and my group got most of the places we needed to go to. Then the search and rescue was fun to save Brian the dummy. But we were in two groups to rescue him on a stretcher then my group took Lucas (our classmate) back for fun.

That was a couple of the photos from our camp.

Overall camp was a really fun experience and we learnt a lot of new things.

My favourite part would have been the sensory trail.

The most challenging part for me was the big hike up Bealey Spur.

How to use Easel.ly easily... - Student Summit

 Hi!

Today it was... STUDENT SUMMIT!!!

Student Summit is a place that we used to go to so we could share how to use different sites. This year we couldn't go there so it was online.

For each of the sessions there was a google meet for each site.

It was very fun but a bit tricky at first on the meets.

After some time it got a bit easier to work on the meets and follow the instructions without having the other students actually in person to help you.

For student summit we had a form to fill out yesterday to choose what workshops we wanted to go to, overall we got four.

Session 1: Suped-up slides with Pear Deck - This was really confusing for me. Firstly it was because everyone was still finding out how it is working and to mute themselves. Secondly no one really understood what was going on and we didn't know if we had to follow along. But it was really fun to watch their presentation. But I don't have anything to share since we didn't have enough time to make anything. Also I learnt that Pear Deck is a google slide add-on that is for your learning.

Session 2: YMS How to use Easel.ly easily - This was by Grace and I. One of the challenges we faced were probably not having enough time or having too many people on the meet so it made it really slow.

Everyone was listening though so that was good, except it is very hard to teach people without seeing their screens to know what is happening.

Grace was explaining everything and I was answering questions.

There weren't too many questions asked but lots of people had problems with getting on or not hearing the instructions.

Session 3: GS Marvelous Miro - This was really fun to learn about since I haven't heard of it before. Since we ran out of time this is all I made...

I think that with more time I could get proper information and make it look a lot cooler.

But now that I know what it is and how to use it I might give it a go later on when I have more time.

The presentation was easy enough to follow apart from signing in but other then that it was really easy and worth the results.

Session 4: SHS Biteable - I do use biteable a lot so I decided that learning more about it would be fun. Although there were technical difficulties with the presenters so it took a long time to get everyone on and started. Because of that we didn't get any time to get to some new stuff that I don't know about. But I still like what I made. It is about penguins... again, but I thought it would just be easier to have the same information but presented in a different way. Here it is:

Sadly I didn't get any YMS presentations apart from my own.

I have a dream...

Hi!

We are having a Yaldhurst speech competition later in the term so we need to get our speeches ready to present.

When Miss Rennell told us we were going to begin our learning on speeches this year I felt nervous for the presenting part and I remembered some of my past speeches.

Before we start learning and creating our speeches we had a task to train our brain.

To set up our mindset for speeches we used the six tools in our past mental toughness toolkit. (Positive thinking, Goal Setting, Attentional Control, Visualisation - The Drawing, Anxiety Control and Self Awareness)

We used google drawings to make a DLO using those things.

Here is my dream for how it will go...

While making this drawing I was thinking about what tips I would need for our speeches.

The hardest part for me during speeches is going to be presenting it since I don't like talking in front of audiences.

The easiest part is going to be writing the speech once I think of a good topic.

I chose these tips for myself because I think that these are important for when I am writing my speech.

What is that voice? It's a comment...

Last for the past two Tuesday afternoons we have been learning to make voice recorded comments.

We did this for cybersmart, here is a link to the lesson we used: LINK.

I chose to do the confident section.

For this we had to go through a slide and make a voice recorded comment.

How? Well read this slide to find out how to do it...

That was the slide, I think that it was a bit difficult at the start but once I did it it was really fun and easy.

Also I think that the code is very confusing at first glance but then it is easy once it gets explained.

We got the words from our class sign in sheet where everyone wrote down a word about the brain.

Then we had 28 words to use in our writing, we didn't have to use all the words but the more words from the list the better.

Resilience...

What is resilience?

Hi!

This week we learnt what resilience is.

Our lesson on it is very easy to remember since our teacher came up and snapped a pen to get the spring inside of it.

The purpose of it was to show that each time you get stretched, you bounce back.

Once the spring bounces back it's a bit longer, which shows that we learn from everything we do.

Where is the helpful part?

Hi!

For the last two Tuesdays we have been learning about quality blog comments.

First we went to the Uru Mānuka site and went to the smart learner tab and went to lesson one.

Then we followed the steps to get into groups and decided if we were beginners, stepping up or confident with our commenting and blogging.

I was in a group with Mia and Grace in the confident area.

We learnt about four different things: Learning, Impact, Editing and Layout.

We read about all of those then began improving comments to make them Positive, Thoughtful, Helpful, have a question and a greeting.

We also went through a checklist to make sure we did everything and watched all the videos.

Here is a picture of one of the comments my group improved.

That was one of the four comments we improved.

I think that we also made the new comment also have a helpful section.

I think that this was a fun activity to do since we could go in groups together and learn lots of new things that will be helpful for my blog posts and comments.

I think that this was a good refresher on some things that I might have learnt before but forgot so this was helpful for me to remember.

DON'T BREAK THE CHAIN!!!!

This week we have been learning lots of ways we can achieve goals.

We started off with learning about James Clear and what his central question is.

Using his website we found that his main question is "How can we live better?"

James Clear is an author, but not just any author.

His work is to read and find information then take the

important parts to make easy to read and understand articles.

James Clear suggests four simple things to train your brain and improve your mental toughness:

Start incredibly small - Make the habits you want to master so easy you can't say no.

Find a way to get started in less than two minutes.

Improve one thing, by one percent - Do it again tomorrow.

Use the Seinfeld Strategy - Maintain consistency.

Using those links we learnt about all four of those topics.

But I chose to blog about the Seinfeld strategy...

I think that this strategy is helpful since you can see if you are achieving your goal.

Also for a lot of people it might be helpful being able to cross off each day and feel successful.

The final Matariki challenge...

Hi!

I have now finished the 5th and final Matariki activity.

For this we had to do a scavenger hunt on our class website.

All around it were 9 facts that we had to find and write down on a sheet of paper with the questions that we had to find the answers.

Then we had to make a quiz using those questions.

On the Kahoot I put all the questions and the answers I found.

It is a bit blurry, but it is what I found.

I found that this was really fun but it was hard to find the first and fifth answer.

If you want to learn some new things about it I suggest the kahoot because what I learnt was helpful and new.

Matariki fractions....

Hi!

I have done another Matariki activity, this one was called "Matariki Maths".

For it we did a colour by number star, but instead of just one number it is a fraction.

At the top there is a key that shows simple fractions and their colour.

So we had to simplify the fractions on the star to find out what colour it is.

There was a easy star, a medium star and a hard star.

I did the easy one and the hard one.

I didn't find it too hard once I got the first few fractions done.

Here is the two completed stars that I did:

That was my completed work.

I think that the easier star looks better since there is less boxes so the colours are more vibrant.

Overall I think that this was helpful to learn how to solve any fraction.

But I don't know if I got it right yet but I think I got it mostly right.

For the easy one I just did the colours in order but for the hard one I chose one fraction at a time to solve and colour in.
